During the winter months it snows almost everyday where I live. When I wake up in the morning, I look out my window to see if any fresh snow fell overnight. When it snows, we can get from a few
inches to a few feet of snow. On most days we get less than 2 inches of fresh powder. On school days I walk to school through the snow with the other school children on the walking school bus.
The walking school bus is just all the school children from different parts of the village walking together. To get on the bus you first walk to the end of your street and wait for the line of children to come by.
Once you join the line an adult chaperone marks you present and the bus moves on to the next pickup location. Some of the parent’s volunteer to walk with the children every morning.
Sometimes we are accompanied by a police officer. All the children are encouraged by the adults to keep up the pace. If you fall behind one of the adults will yell at you to catch up to the line.
We can talk and have fun but we must all stay together. There are many walking school buses from different parts of the village. When we get to school all the children go straight to their individual classroom.
There are three classes in my grade. Some days when I go to the window to check for fresh snow. I get very excited when I see plenty of new snow. I would run to my parents and ask them if today
is a snow day. “Let’s check the school bulletin board”, my father would say. To check the school bulletin board, my father or mother would log onto the computer and go to the school website for any updates.
The school message boardreads “Due to inclement weather there will be no school today...”, “it’s a snow day!”, I screamed out loudly. Sometimes the announcement comes over the local
radio station if the snowfall is really bad. Snow days feel so magical, it’s like a surprise party where all your friend get together to have fun very unexpectedly.
On a snow day I like to go back to bed and sleep some more. When I wake up, I have breakfast. After breakfast I call all my friends to come over; some of them call me first.
When we get together, we play all kinds of indoor games; Pokémon, uno and other fun board games. We also play outside in the snow. By the end of the day all the children are tired from a day of fun.
Why are snow days so special? Because we don’t have to go to school on what should rightfully be a school day, that’s why! However, snow days may soon be a thing of the past because now we
can have school over the internet using the zoom software. It will be a sad day for me if zoom lessons replaces snow days.
